The audience is the asset

NASCAR Sundays is the watch party series we run out of Charlotte and New York. Tonight it takes over the NASCAR Hall of Fame, 400 E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, for the Daytona night race. Doors 6:30, green flag 7:30 ET on CW. Free, with an RSVP.

The room is the visible part. The list that fills it is the thing we actually built.

Almost everything about an event can be hired. You can rent the room, book the DJ, buy the drinks, pay somebody to make the poster. The one thing you cannot order on short notice is a group of people who know your name and want to know where you will be on a Friday night.

That is what we have spent this season building, and we built it the slow way. Watch party after watch party, in bars and back rooms, week after week through the summer. People showed up, had a good night, and asked to hear about the next one. Those answers went into our own records, not somebody else's.

That is why a night like this is possible at all. Nothing sits between us and those people. The event page is a page on a site we run. The RSVP is a record in our own database, so we know who is coming before anybody reaches the door. The list of people who asked to hear from us is a list we hold. The artwork comes out of our own library. There is no platform in the middle deciding who gets to hear from us, and no company holding our audience on our behalf and renting it back.

So we call the list the asset, not the room. A room can be booked again next month. An audience that answers when you call took a season to earn, and it does not transfer to anybody else.

Tonight's race is the Winn-Dixie 250, the last race of the regular season in the NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series. One hundred laps at Daytona, with the last spots in the Chase still open.

Tomorrow night the Cup Series runs the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona, the race that decides its own sixteen-driver playoff field. We will be in two rooms for it: Charlotte at Hoppin, 1402 Winnifred Street in South End, and New York at Burgerology Midtown, 320 West 36th Street.
